EGGS GALORE!

Over the past week, many eggs have been found inside the enclosures of the rescued female Indian star tortoises at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC). This photo shows one such site where a tortoise dug a hole and laid her eggs.

It is not uncommon for female tortoises to lay eggs. These are, however, unfertilised eggs. Previously, when the tortoises were housed indoors, we had to provide the female tortoises with sand trays in which they could lay their eggs. Sometimes, when not given a suitable environment, a tortoise might not lay the eggs, and this can lead to serious health problems such egg binding (Dystocia).

Inside the naturalistic outdoor enclosures at the Main Sanctuary Area, the soil/sand environment allows the tortoises to dig and lay eggs. We try our best to monitor which tortoise/s is/are laying the eggs and their respective weights. X-rays are also performed to ensure that all eggs are laid, so that we can prevent health problems from arising.
