Georgia Aquariums Attempts To Import Wild Beluga Whales Shut Down In Huge Win For Whales!

GEORGIA AQUARIUM WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO IMPORT WILD-CAUGHT BELUGA WHALES
The tide is turning against the keeping of whales and dolphins in captivity, especially wild-caught individuals.
A federal judge in Atlanta recently upheld a government agency’s denial of a permit that would have allowed the Georgia Aquarium to import 18 wild-caught beluga whales from Russia.
“We are thrilled with the court’s ruling,” said Dr. Naomi Rose, marine mammal scientist at the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI). “The MMPA [Marine Mammal Protection Act] was enacted to protect marine mammals from harm and exploitation and that is exactly what it has done in this case. The US will thankfully not be part of the unsustainable and inhumane trade in belugas out of Russia.”
A recent legal victory marked big win for wild Belugas, as a U.S. District Court judge ruled to uphold NOAAs earlier decision to deny the Georgia Aquariums request to import 18 Beluga whales.
