NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUND UP: 06 MAY 2016

This week, our wildlife rescue team came across yet another turtle – with fish hook lodged on his front limb and mouth. Thanks to the fantastic hard work by the team at The Pet Doctors Veterinary Clinic the hook was removed safely and turtle is recovering.

Our wildlife rescue team comes across cases of many wild animals injured or in distress from fish hooks and lines. The list of victims includes turtles, monitor lizards, snakes and even birds. Thanks to the wonderful people who called for help when they come across these wild animals stranded within nature areas, canals or even small public ponds, unable to move and needing rescue.

These animals suffer a great deal, tangled up in fishing lines that limit movement for example, birds and snakes who die a slow and painful death hanging from tree branches, due to entanglement in fishing lines and netting material.

We often find turtles and monitor lizards who accidentally bite or even swallow the hooks, which may result in inflammation, pain and infection. Many at times, it is also heart breaking to witness abandoned pet red eared terrapins in such distress.

To help our wildlife and other animals who share their habitats with us, please help to raise the awareness that it is illegal to fish in canals and water bodies where there is a sign indicating the dos and donts! If you see illegal fishing activities, please report to the authorities based on where the activity is sighted: PUB at 1800 2255 782 and the NParks at 1800 471 7300.

Have a great weekend everyone!
