Below are some of our recently featured rescues in newspaper and online articles. And here is what the rescue officers involved in these cases had to share on co-existence and being viewed handling large reptiles:

Alpana Ahuja, who has volunteered with ACRES since 2007 and as a rescue volunteer in the recent years said, “Snakes are more visible because of a shrinking habitat. They are natures pest control and an important part of our ecosystems. Let’s learn how to co-exist”.

Lee Anne who is an active and dedicated wildlife rescue volunteer for more than 3 years now, shared that Rescuing large reptiles is not brave or heroic, because if an animal is in distress, it’s only right to try to help them, and there’s nothing to fear from them once you understand their behaviour and are trained in handling them. If people continue demanding these reptiles be removed, they can expect to see more rats in and around their homes. With the ever-increasing human encroachment into forested areas, encounters with wildlife will only become more frequent and people need to learn to be aware and live in harmony with these animals.

Carmen Choong, our volunteer turned full-time wildlife rescue officer feels, Understanding these beautiful and gentle reptiles is the first step to cohabitation, an important aspect of preserving our biodiversity, and Raj Kumar, our wildlife rescue officer aptly redefined bravery as It may seem like a ” heroic” act because most of us are terrified of these animals, what we lack is education and that’s why we are here. The real bravery is co-existence, to let them be.

Our thanks to the media for helping to raise awareness on our native wildlife as well.

The 2.5-metre-long reticulated python was found coiled in the car’s engine compartment and was believed to have slithered from the nearby drain and into the car overnight.
