Sponsor-A-Dog At Meijis Sanctuary

I have written lots and lots about the great work that Meiji does. She currently looks after 135 dogs single-handedly at her sanctuary in Raub, and her only source of income is from rubber-tapping.

We have been helping Meiji now, for three years, in (previously) fully sponsoring the spay-neuter of her dogs, their medical treatment and providing dogfood in bulk every 1-2 months. Under our new subsidy scheme, we now continue to subsidise the medical needs of her dogs and we still provide dogfood for her.

However, I was talking to Meiji on the phone two days ago and she lamented that her health has taken a toll on her and she is finding it very hard to cope with the task of managing the sanctuary. She said she wished someone could help take some of her dogs because it’s just too many to cope for her.

I thought about this for two days to see how we can help her out.

This morning, I spoke with Meiji on several proposals that I had come up with and to cut a long story and many phonecalls short, she has agreed on the following:

1. Meiji says it would help very much if she has a worker to help her at the sanctuary, especially on days when she has to bring dogs down to UPM or KL for treatment. Each trip takes 10 hours, to and fro, and after getting back, she still has to single-handedly feed her dogs. She wants to offer this job to a Thai lady and the salary of workers over there is RM900 per month (daily wages of RM30) without room and board. Apparently, workers buy and cook their own meals, it is not provided by the employer. I spoke to a friend, and voila, he says he and his friends will sponsor the wages of this worker for one year. So we’ve got that taken care of for one year now, provided the Thai lady agrees to the job proposal. Otherwise, Meiji would have to employ someone else.

2. Meiji’s dogs are mostly old dogs; at least 7 years and above. Hence, it would be very hard to get them adopted. She doesn’t simply take in new dogs (she cannot cope anymore!), but sometimes, she sees injured dogs on the road and she just cannot turn a blind eye to them. Rehoming old dogs is going to be very, very hard and Meiji wants to ensure that they only go to good homes.

I proposed a Sponsor-A-Dog programme for Meiji whereby interested sponsors pay RM50 per month (per dog) for the upkeep of her older dogs. This would be income for Meiji which she can use for food and maintenance of the dog.

If you are interested in sponsoring an older dog at Meiji’s sanctuary (until the end of its natural life), please liaise directly with Meiji:

Please note that there is no reception for the handphone up at her sanctuary, so please send smses. She will reply when she comes downhill. Please give a few days before expecting a reply.

3. I have enlisted the help of PAWS to see if they would be willing to take in Meiji’s younger dogs (3 years and below). PAWS has agreed. Meiji will liaise directly with PAWS on this and make the necessary arrangements.

Here are some photos of Meiji and her dogs (below).

I hope some of you can help out in her Sponsor-A-Dog programme. At RM50 per month, you will get to support an older dog and ensure it gets to live out its natural life on Meiji’s beautiful sanctuary. You can be assured Meiji will look after the dog well. The RM50 will only cover food and boarding. It does not cover medical expenses.

Below are 4 of our Klang rescues which Meiji took in two years ago – Doby, Russell, Sweetie and Jackie. We paid RM50 per dog per month until we started supplying her with food in bulk and Meiji says there was no need for the RM200 anymore since we have helped her so much more with food and medical sponsorships. We continued paying in full for the medical treatment of these dogs. So far, only Doby needs medical treatment for his perpetual skin problem.

Since Meiji needs the funds badly now, we will resume the RM50 per dog per month for these 4 dogs. At the same time, our help with subsidies for the medical treatment of all her dogs and our dogfood donation continues.

Here are our dogs:

Doby

Doby has a skin problem but it isn’t life-threatening. He has been given several types of medication to address this problem. Doby was actually rehomed on another Bentong farm in 2010 after we took him out of the Klang Pound, but Meiji visited one day and found Doby in a sickly condition. On her own, she took Doby for medical treatment and Doby has been with Meiji ever since.

Jackie

Jackie was rescued from the Klang Pound with a crushed eye and the other eye going blind. We provided surgery to enucleate the crushed eye and soon, her other eye got better. Jackie was foster for 4 months by my friend, Yi Lin, but we couldn’t find an adopter for her. Meiji offered to take Jackie.

Russell (in the hut)

Russell was also one of our Klang rescues. As handsome and healthy as he was, we boarded him at PAWS for four months but no one wanted to adopt him. He now lives with Meiji and is the taikor (big brother) in his little “kingdom” with other dogs.

Sweetie

Also our Klang rescue, Sweetie had tick fever and TVT, but recovered with treatment. She was fostered for many months by my friend, Dayani, and again, we could not find an adopter for her, so Meiji offered to take her as well.

We are very thankful that Meiji is looking after Doby, Jackie, Russell and Sweetie, and we will sponsor their medical treatment in full (since they are our rescues) until the end of their lives, and also provide food for them.

Meiji says there has been a rescuer who kept harassing her saying that since she had taken 4 of our dogs, Meiji must also take in her rescues. Well, our dogs were taken in early 2010 when Meiji was not so overwhelmed, and we provide for them. More than that, we also help Meiji with the spay-neuter and medical treatment of her dogs, and dogfood donations are sent in bulk.

So, to start off Meiji’s Sponsor-a-Dog programme, we will continue our RM200 per month to sponsor the maintenance of Doby, Jackie, Russell and Sweetie (already banked in on 18th February).

We hope our readers will also take up the sponsorship of a dog at Meiji’s sanctuary (it only costs RM50 per month). Priority will be given to an older dog and should that particular dog pass away, Meiji will inform you for your decision whether the sponsorship is to be transferred to another dog or to be terminated.

Please contact Meiji by sms if you are interested to help. You can type your message in English.
