When we received the 500kg donated catfood from Royal Canin, we hadn’t expected such a big consignment. Apart from Maslinda Abd Talib, our other catfood recipients were not from Selangor and we could not transport the food out of the state as that would have incur extra expenses.

Coincidentally, Noraini Suriya wrote to us enquiring what help could be given to some dogs in her neighbourhood and she mentioned that the pledge from our reader had ended. So we asked if she would like some catfood (but we would require her to fill up the Food Fund form) and she replied in the affirmative. Previously, we had funded 4 of her cases and this was before one of our readers offered to take over the task of helping Noraini. Based on what we knew and also early testimonies from this reader, Noraini is a cat rescuer.

According to Noraini, the 30 rescued cats are still with her now (all neutered, mostly sponsored by our reader). We have urged her to get some of these cats rehomed so that it would be more comfortable for her to look after a smaller number, bearing in mind the limited resources that she has. She said she is considering this.

Noraini told us that she also feeds 10 more stray cats in 3 different locations. Our food subsidy (the 8 bags of donated Royal Canin) is for these 10 strays and we believe it would be sufficient to last until the end of this year.

We have urged Noraini to endeavour to get these 10 strays neutered so as to control the population. Vaccination is also an option. From the photographs, some of these cats look like they may require medical attention too.

Noraini is welcome to claim subsidies from our Medical Fund for the neutering and medical needs of these 10 stray cats.

As for our Food Fund, as with everyone else, it is based on availability of funds (or donated food, if we are lucky!) and a set of criteria to be met. Needy rescuers and feeders may apply, but we will look at the number of animals cared for, whether they are neutered and medically treated and whether attempts had been made to rehome them (if they are rehomable). We review these each time an application is made, so no one remains indefinitely on our Food Fund (as our resources are limited too).
