A Sharing From Bintulu (by Jurina Johan)

One of the reasons that prompted me to write all my books is to share with other like-minded animal lovers what one person can do with limited resources and capabilities. The message in all my books is simply that we can all do whatever we can within our means and no matter how small our efforts may seem to be, it still makes a big difference to the animals whom we help.

I think what is important is that we have to know our limits and we should only do as much as we can within these limits. Problems arise when we take on too much and we find that we cannot handle, and in animal caregiving work, we are not dealing with inanimate objects but living, feeling, sentient beings who need food, shelter, medical care and lots of love.

Jurina Johan is a school-teacher in Bintulu and we have been communicating for quite some time now. I wish to share Jurina’s story with you here because her efforts inspire me! She does her cat caregiving work in her own time, within her means and with her own funds. She also supports our work by purchasing our tshirts, soap, toothpaste and donates to our fund.

Jurina tells me that her caregiving work is “nothing much”, but I beg to differ. I think it is really something and what which might seem “ordinary”, is, in reality, beautiful. The “amazing” and “awesome” only happens once in a while, the rest of life is filled with the ordinary and to me, the day-to-day ordinary things that we do…is beautiful.

Thank you, Jurina, for all that you do!

Hi KY,
Gosh, it has been such a looonggg time since I last wrote to you. But I read your blog regularly, and that never fails to make my day!

Let me update you on things i’ve been doing. I had moved to a new place here, and it was really stressful as I had some back alley cats that I feed regularly. I managed to rehome 3, and i brought 3 to move with me. The rest (well actually it is only 2 neutered cats), I managed to convince my neighbour to feed everyday, provided I supply the food. I am more than happy to oblige, they were heaven-sent! And they adopted one cat too, and she is now the queen of their home!

Jody, the one they adopted, seldom goes out of their house, she even poos and pees in their bathroom. She really is a teacher’s pet, no one has ever taught her to do her business in the bathroom! I’m so proud of her being able to adapt so comfortably.

Anyway, I am so thankful to have such a kind neighbour. The family of three (mom, daughter and son who love cats!) takes good care of Jody, and the back alley cats are doing well too. I am forever grateful and thankful, and I will continue helping out with the food for as long as I can.

Meanwhile, at my school, the security guard, also loves cats. And he is always on board with me when I talk about spaying and neutering cats. He has a one-eyed cat (neutered and doing well now). Just a few weeks back, he rescued a cat and brought her to the school, and we managed to spay her last week (together with a female stray at my new place). Alas, she was stolen just recently. The pakcik is broken-hearted! I am too, as the cat is really manja. No wonder she got kidnapped. I am just thankful that we had spayed her.

A few months back, there was a calico female cat in school adopted by a student, just after she was spayed. I heard she’s really doing well at her new home.

In Bintulu, there are only 2 vets. Yup, only 2. And the one I regularly go to, is supportive as well. She gives me a discount when I spay a female cat. Everytime I go to her clinic, her first question is-Ni kucing stray mana pula ni? LOL!!

That is what I’ve been up to, and I just felt like sharing with you .

I am so out of topic. Actually I am wondering if the toothpaste is still available? If so, I would like to buy 2 tubes.

Thanks KY!
