Subject: Application For ‘Short Tail Puppy’
To: Chan Kah Yein <chankahyein@gmail.com>

Good evening miss,

I would like to apply for this female puppy.
Mum and dad found her on last Tuesday night when they went out to feed the dogs. They fed her with food and gave her some water. At that time, her tail was still attached but it was ‘hanging’. Her right back leg appeared to be paralyzed as she was dragging her leg.
The next day (Wednesday), the puppy was nowhere to be found. Mum went and look for her again in the evening.
The puppy was there, at the same place where she was first found.
What happened was the puppy fell into a drain so mum could not find her.
A Malay neighbour (husband, wife, and 2 young sons) rescued this puppy from the drain while covering their hands with plastic bags. Thanks to them, this female puppy is still alive. It rained that day too so the Malay family prepared everything including a broken cage and some shelter.
We brought the female puppy for them to see today after coming back from the vet. They were really happy to see the positive progress.
The husband also explained that whenever he sees an animal (dog and cat) knocked down by vehicles, he will try his best to carry the body to the roadside.
He said that even though the animal is dead, they still feel ‘pain’ being crushed like that and he himself feels ‘painful’ too.
They live a simple life and they are truly amazing. Times like these make my mum and I really, really happy!
The puppy had her tail run over by a car or motorbike and due to the pain, she ‘pulled’ off her tail causing the nerves connecting her tail and her right back leg to be damaged. That is why her tail was hanging (then later it broke off) and her right back leg appeared to be paralyzed.
Good news is that she still feels sensation on that leg. She can walk with that leg already but she is still ‘knuckling’ it.
Doctor saidlast resort will be amputation. The puppy will need time to recover as well as rehabilitation.
Mum and I brought the puppy back to our home for home-treatment.
Attached are the photos.
Thank you very much,
Lester Hiew

When Lester mentioned this case to me, I thought acupuncture or physiotherapy might be helpful. It reminded me of Max’s case (from Ipoh). If you remember, Max had bunny hind legs (he is doing well, living with his “specialness” with Lydia). But a vet’s assessment is necessary.

So this morning, Lester and Jenny brought Simba (just named) to see the vet while Tabs and I were there.

Simba is one of the happiest puppies I’ve seen despite her “disability” of the knuckling hind legs. She was prancing about everywhere while we waited for the vet.

I checked with Lester after that and was informed that the vet also recommended acupuncture and physiotherapy, and that Simba’s tail would have to be docked. If these two alternative treatments cannot help, amputation may be necessary. Lester is not claiming for today’s consultation charges as it was minimal.

We have recommended Lester to contact Dr Susanna at asiapaws.com for acupuncture and Lydia Telleson for physiotherapy.

Simba (a strong name given by Lester and Jenny) will undergo treatment and we will subsidise as per policy while Mr Kok Khee Wee and Ms Cindy Lim will top up the balances.
