MOBILE STERILISATION CLINIC HELD IN NAKHON SAWAN PROVINCE

Soi Dog Foundation is increasingly being asked to help local people who care for dogs, often in remote areas of Thailand. This month we organised a clinic in Nakhon Sawan province, a few hours north of Bangkok. Soi Dog Foundations’s Khun Toom led the clinic which included a former Soi Dog vet Dr Tae, who has his own clinic in Northern Thailand, and Dr Lek from Bangkok, as well as two contracted dog catchers also from Bangkok. Local students also helped in catching dogs. The clinic was also supported by two lovely ladies from Bangkok who have been helping a local lady who cares for the dogs in the area.

The majority of the dogs who were sterilised over a three day period live in the sugar cane fields, and with now being the harvesting season were at great risk as the farmers burn the fields to get rid of unwanted leaves. The dogs were reluctant to come out until they heard the car engine of Khun Janya, a local lady who feeds them every day. Khun Janya is a dedicated dog carer, who cares for 100 dogs at her home as well as the strays nearby. Dog catchers were kept busy darting the dogs while Dr Yim and Dr Lek skilfully sterilised the dogs as they were caught. A total of 142 dogs were sterilised during the sterilisation clinic preventing the future birth and suffering of countless puppies. Meanwhile our Bangkok clinic is making regular visits to another carer who looks after over 1,000 dogs 2 hours outside the capital.

The sterilisation clinic attracted the attention of local media, which Soi Dog hopes will spread awareness on the benefits of sterilising dogs in the area. You can find out more about Soi Dogs sterilisation program by visiting http://www.soidog.org/en/spay-neuter-program/ and it is only with your help that more sterilisation clinics can be held, in turn reducing the suffering of Thailand’s strays.
