ACRES Wildlife Rescue: Rescue Video Of Shrapnel, The Reticulated Python

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE: RESCUE VIDEO FOR SHRAPNEL, A RETICULATED PYTHON.

Last month, the ACRES Wildlife Rescue team was called upon to attend to a python in a drain. Pythons should usually be left alone in drains, but this particular python had gotten stuck in a subsoil pipe.

This happens occasionally, and snakes have died in the past when the drain floods. We suspect this happens when the pipes are clogged causing a suction effect on the large surface area of the snake, making him/her stuck.

In this case, the poor python also had injuries caused by jagged pieces of metal sticking out of the concrete. The gash on his skin can be seen in the video.

We needed to get Shrapnel out of the drain, as he would almost certainly have died if left in there.

Shrapnel’s rescue operation was a one and a half hour ordeal, involving our rescue officers having to find a way to cut the metal with a cutter, and slowly taking turns to pull the snake out firmly but gently, finally pulling him free. The drain was wet and waste water from nearby drainage holes was pouring into this drain, filling the air with the strong unmistakable smell of….human vomit. It was not the most pleasant of rescues, but at least Shrapnel was saved!

Shrapnel was taken to the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre and given some topical medication to prevent infection of the gash. Shrapnel should be ready for release in due time.
