A reminder — make sure your pet will be safe and sheltered and fed and loved through the New Year holiday. If you haven’t yet made a plan — it’s time!!

PLAN HOLIDAY CARE FOR YOUR PET NOWIt is a privilege to own a dog or cat. A responsible pet owner is blessed with loyalty, companionship and joy, and in return ensures that his pet always has shelter, food and water. Now is the time to plan how you will care for your pet during Chinese New Year.If you will be traveling, or spending more time away from home than usual, you need to plan how your pet will be fed twice daily and exercised. The pet’s home will need to be cleaned at least daily, the water bowl filled, and any medical problems addressed. If you cannot meet these duties yourself, a neighbor or friend or family member can agree to visit and help. Your pet can temporarily visit the home of a friend or family member, perhaps someone who has a pet of their own who will enjoy the company. Or, you can contract with a number of grooming salons and pet boarding services here in Kuching that can come to your home and take care of the feeding and cleaning and monitoring. Do not wait until the last minute to make these arrangements the company will want to visit your home, meet your pet, and make sure the arrangement is sensible in advance. You can also arrange to have your dog or pet boarded at a veterinary clinic, grooming salon or pet hotel. You will find an up-to-date contacts list for Kuching veterinary clinics on SSPCA’s Facebook page (under Notes). This option assures your pet receives two sound meals per day, professional supervision, and a location reasonably protected from the noise and glare of fireworks. In fact, some dog owners place their pups in boarding to protect them from exposure to fireworks, even if the owners aren’t planning to travel. What you SHOULD NOT plan is to leave your pet at the Sarawak SPCA Animal Shelter, or simply turn it out on the street. The owner of an animal is legally and morally responsible for its care. Under Sarawak’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Law, it is a crime for an owner to neglect to provide sufficient food or water, or to permit any unnecessary pain or suffering. Sarawak SPCA supports vigorous enforcement of this law.So plan now, and you and your pet will be set to enjoy the Year of the Monkey.SARAWAK SOCIETY FOR PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
