DISCOVER THE STORY BEHIND THESE ADOPTED PIGS

A recent study supports the widely-held belief that pigs are very smart and very social animals.

‘We have shown that pigs share a number of cognitive capacities with other highly intelligent species such as dogs, chimpanzees, elephants, dolphins, and even humans,’ said neuroscientist Lori Marino of Emory University, co-author of the study.

Dr. Marino, a neuroscientist and founder of the Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy, together with Christina M. Colvin, a professor at Emory University, published the paper titled “Thinking Pigs: A Comparative Review of Cognition, Emotion, and Personality in Sus domesticus.” Overall, the research suggests that pigs have excellent long-term memories, and are skilled at mazes and other tests requiring location of objects.

The authors of the study hope that the results will make people think differently about pigs: animals that are traditionally seen as meat.

Pigs, like Arnold and Annabelle in this video, love to play around, take walks and have baths. These two adorable rescued pigs were lucky to be adopted by Janette Reever, a deputy manager for the Humane Society of the United States, who was able provide a forever home where they can live in comfort and develop their natural behaviour.

Cute though they may be, Melissa Susko, from PIGS Animal Sanctuary, reminds us that this is a unique situation, and pigs are not suitable house pets.
