We compiled a list of common Questions that we received from members of public.

Q1: Should my dog get rabies shot?

A1: Sarawak requires that all dogs over three months of age be vaccinated for rabies by a veterinarian. It is a public health issue. The number one way to prevent the spread of rabies is vaccination.

Q2.How much is the rabies vaccination given by Department of Veterinary Services during mass vaccination?

A2. It is FREE, you pay nothing.

Q3. My dog lives indoor. Is it necessary?

A3. What happens if your indoor pet gets outside and is gone for a day or more? What do you do if your pet comes back with a bite wound? Making sure your pet is vaccinated ensures that they are protected.

Q4. Can I vaccinate my own dog for rabies?

A4. If you vaccinate your own animal for rabies, officials do not recognize your vaccination as valid. You and the animal will be treated as if NO rabies vaccine was administered. Only a licensed veterinarian may administer vaccinations.

Q5.Do dogs have reactions to rabies shot?

A5. Systemic reactions include fever, depression, loss of appetite, lethargy and weakness. They usually appear within 1-2 days of vaccination and then disappear.

Q6. What are the side effects of rabies vaccine in dogs?

A6. Common side effects of the rabies vaccine in dogs include swelling or firmness of the skin at the vaccination site, mild allergic reaction, low-grade fever, decreased appetite, lethargy, sneezing, coughing, or runny nose.

Q7. Why need to quarantine my dog for 28 days?

A7. This raises the question of when an animal is considered to be “currently vaccinated.” A dog is not considered to be vaccinated until 28 days after the initial inoculation. Rabies vaccinations are considered outdated 1 day beyond the 1-year or 3-year anniversary of the vaccination. On revaccination, the pet is considered immunised immediately.

Q8. How many times do we need to give rabies vaccination to our dogs?

A8. Veterinary Services of Sarawak regulates the age at which it is first administered. A second vaccination is recommended after 1 year, then boosters every 3 years. Puppies need a booster 1 year after completing their initial series, then all dogs need a booster every 3 years or more often.

Q9. Can a dog survive rabies?

A9. There is no treatment. Once the disease develops in humans, death is almost certain. Only a handful of people have survived rabies after extremely intensive medical care. There have been several reported cases of dogs surviving the infection, but they are very rare.

Q10. How long does Rabies take to kill a dog?

A10. In rare cases, it can vary from 10 days to 2 years. The incubation period is shorter in children and in people exposed to a large dose of the rabies virus. The dose of virus depends on the size, severity and location of an animal bite or scratch.

Q11. How long can Rabies survive in a dead animal?

A11. Once saliva is dried, it is no longer consid- ered infectious. The virus also is readily destroyed by bleach, ultraviolet light, and/ or heat. Live rabies virus will not survive for more than 24 hours in dead animals when temperatures reach 70 Fahrenheit.

Q12. Some people said that the DVS administered the vaccine with water. Is that true?

If you’re doubtful on free vaccination, please bring your dog(s) to private vet for rabies vaccination.
