Poaching Kills A Wild Boar In Western Catchment. A..

POACHING KILLS A WILD BOAR IN WESTERN CATCHMENT

ACRES is saddened by today’s case of a wild pig trapped in a poaching trap at the Lim Chu Kang cemetery. The pig was unfortunately dead on our arrival in 30 minutes from the call.

Our veterinarian’s assessment showed that this young male pig died from stress of being trapped in a tight space. He lost multiple toe nails which also caused severe bleeding. He still had a metal spring in his mouth when found which could have been where the bait was.

The huge trap is suspected to have been set up on site using construction metal, wood and wires. The western catchment and cemetery grounds holds home for many wild animals such as the critically endangered Sunda pangolins, in addition to many species of birds, insects, snakes, turtles and amphibians. If one could set up such a huge trap onsite for a wild boar, many concerns arise for the other wildlife who live in these habitats.

Last October (2018), ACRES rescued and released 5 wild pigs in an illegal trap along Sime road (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/wild-boars-found-trapped-in-cage-off-sime-road-10803446).

Singapore’s wildlife are never restricted to nature reserves, and they constantly explore and inhabit green pockets including military training areas. This is why protection of wildlife outside nature reserves is also vital to our biodiversity!
