WWF-Malaysia commends the effective action taken by Pasukan Polis Marin PDRM and Jabatan PERHILITAN Semenanjung Malaysia in foiling the attempt to smuggle in orang utans and other protected animals into Malaysia, as reported in Muar, Johor recently.
This shows that concerted effort by all agencies are required in our fight against the illegal wildlife trade. Globally, the illegal wildlife trade is estimated to be worth USD 7–23 billion per year.
Environmental crimes can cut across many enforcement agencies’ jurisdiction, hence the need for greater collaboration between agencies to effectively suppress illegal wildlife trade and other environmental crimes.
