APPEAL FOR INFORMATION

[APPEAL FOR INFORMATION]

Cruelty to a Protected Wild Animal

This time yesterday, at 6.20pm, a town council personnel found this water monitor lizard helplessly bound at a bin centre at 334 Kreta Ayer Road.

Thanks to the Essential Maintenance Service Unit (EMSU) for alerting us, the lizard was later rescued by our wildlife rescue team for release.

This is an appeal for information to anyone who may have information on this incident. Our Animal Crime Investigation Unit (ACIU) has filed a case with the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS). But if you have information to build this case, please contact us at acrescrime@gmail.com with photos or call us at 97837782 (24-hour wildlife rescue and crime hotline).

Under the Wild Animals and Birds Act, any person who kills, takes or keeps any wild animal or bird, other than those specified in the Schedule, without a licence shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $1,000 and to the forfeiture of the wild animal or bird.

Under the Animals and Birds Act, any person who cruelly beats, kicks, ill-treats, over-rides, over-drives, over-loads, tortures, infuriates or terrifies any animal is guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to (for a first offence) a fine not exceeding $15,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 18 months or to both.

We are glad to have been able to help the monitor lizard, but it is cruel to have a live animal tied up like this and left to die. Even though one may fear wild animals such as snakes or monitor lizards, the natural instinct of this emotion should give more reason to stay away and not handle on their own.
