Painted Terrapin Hatchlings In Setiu Wetlands
Tweet |
It’s #TerrapinTuesday! A terrapin is a freshwater turtle and in #SetiuWetlands we work to protect the #CriticallyEndangered painted terrapins (Batagur borneoensis).
Right now is the species’ nesting season so the ladies are swimming from the mangrove riverbanks to the beaches to lay their eggs. Our team will patrol the nesting beaches at night to collect these eggs and transport them to the hatchery. The eggs will be buried in the beach sand and they will be safe from predators such as monitor lizards and poachers.
Question: When is the nesting season for painted terrapins?
A. May – July
B. June – September
C. July – September
D. August – October
