Urban Developments And Increased Wildlife Sighting..

URBAN DEVELOPMENTS AND INCREASED WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS

The on-going developments in the Southwestern parts of Singapore means more sighting of Singapore’s wild neighbours, especially the long-tailed macaques. Being forest fringe animals, they will seek new resting and foraging sites in concentrated residential areas as their forests become fragmented due to our urbanisation.

Animals use just about anything to move between spaces: park connectors, bridges, canals, roads and even expressways. These macaques need time to adjust to the changes and wildlife encounters will be increasingly common.

Here are two critical ways that will help them and ourselves adapt to the string of changes in our shared environment:

1. Please do not “feed” them.

It may be a one-off feeding to you or just stale bread you threw out, but the collective action of the individuals make a huge impact which in turn alters their behaviours tremendously.

2. Dispose organic/edible waste responsibly (to reduce exposure, sight and smell that will trigger potential foraging).

Your patience and understanding will help us move towards co-existence. We can all do our part in making our living spaces safer and kinder for all.
