A MATHEMATICAL PROBLEM YOU DON’T COME ACROSS IN SCHOOL

Feeding pigeons may be an act of good intentions but it does lead to increase in population, complaints and culling.

This is how the algorithm works. Say there are 20 pigeons (like those in the photo) in your estate who forage naturally for survival. Two residents in your neighbourhood started feeding rice and bread daily to the flock who likes to come to the grass patch every day. With additional food they reproduce more. Why? Because it’s the fundamental nature of an animal to flourish with more food available.

Let’s say there are 7 breeding couples among those 20 pigeons who chose to breed up to 6 times this year (instead of say 4 times a year) because there is additional food supply from the residents and the food waste that is left or littered around.

The initial 20 will easily grow to more than 40 pigeons within a year because of the extra food.

If complaints are filed and culling is meted out, perhaps 10 pigeons get poisoned and are painfully killed. Why only 10? Because the feeding sites may different to the site of the residents. And so, there will be 30 pigeons left. The cycle viciously starts again, and you’re back to square one with potentially more pigeon head count.
