Malaysia Has Recorded At Least 70 Species Of Shark..

Malaysia has recorded at least 70 species of sharks and 85 species of rays.

.

Last year, four new species of shark and two species of ray have been listed as endangered and protected under newly amended Fisheries (Control of Endangered Species of Fish) (Amendment) Regulations 2019.

.

The newly listed species under the Shark group are:

1) Sphyrna mokarran (great hammerhead shark)

2) Sphyrna zygaena (smooth hammerhead shark)

3) Eusphyra blochii (winghead shark)

4) Carcharhinus longimanus (oceanic whitetip shark)

.

The species under the Ray group are:

1) Mobula birostris (oceanic manta)

2) Mobula alfredi (reef manta)

.

However there are many more efforts that are needed to enforce and manage the protection of these species.
