Forum: Dog Adopters Tasked To Be Responsible

REPLY TO LETTERS ON PROJECT ADORE

The SPCA understands that there may be some concerns about the recent Project ADORE height and weight changes (50cm to 55cm and no weight criteria) from the non-dog owning community. Since the launch in 2012, the scheme has been well run by the animal welfare groups involved. Nuisance complaints against Project ADORE dogs have been very low.

.

When someone adopts a Singapore Special under the scheme, they:

1. are thoroughly counselled

2. sign an agreement to be responsible pet owners

3. sign up for compulsory obedience training for the dog 4. are asked to keep the dog under a homestay trial for a period of time before the adoption is confirmed.

This is a much more rigorous process than when one walks into a pet shop to buy a puppy.

.

We will continue to run Project ADORE responsibly and we ask for the community’s support for this vital scheme that provides much needed homes for animals from the street.

I thank Mr Chang Yong Yen and Miss Lynn Neo Si Jie for voicing their concerns about the Project Adore programme, and on inconsiderate dog owners (Inconsiderate dog owners already a problem before scheme revision, March 5; Bigger problems with bigger dogs in HDB flats, March 11)..
