FRIENDS FOR LIFE: 21-YEAR-OLD GINGER

In 2019, SPCA distributed ‘paw-neer generation’ packages to senior cats and the oldest feline found was 21-year-old Ginger. Coincidentally, she was adopted from us! This is Joyce & Ginger’s story of becoming friends for life.

Joyce: “Ginger was adopted in April 1999 from SPCA Singapore. I believe every breed deserves a second chance and a lovely home. She still enjoys taking naps and is antisocial towards other cats, hissing them away. She prefers spending time on her scratching board, sunbathing, or exploring the house.

Ginger has stuck to Science Diet for the past 15 years — a brand introduced by SPCA since her adoption day. But as her age caught up, we offered her more choices like the Ciao Churu Cream Cat Treats. Apart from dry food and treats, she will ask for wet food daily. She might be old but she knows how to cherry-pick flavours and mummy has to take note. Most importantly, she drinks lots of water.

When she was around 19, we noticed her hind legs were weaker as she started losing balance. This could have been caused by her joints and muscle deterioration. She also has cloudy eyes but they do not seem to bother her much.

Her biggest issue is having urinary incontinence. She can no longer use the cat litter box as she has difficulty entering it due to its height. Hence, daily or twice-daily butt baths are necessary. Despite the mess she gets herself into, mummy will tell her that it’s alright as I am here for her. She knows we love her so much and I guess that’s why she is hanging on.

I used to be a carefree person who would go on impromptu overseas trips but Ginger taught me to be a responsible and disciplined person for the past two decades. Taking care of an animal is never easy; you have to do it wholeheartedly. Treat them as your family members and never give them up no matter what happens!” – Joyce
