Coronavirus: No Violations At Singapore Wet Markets Selling Live Turtles, Frogs, Eels For Food

JOINT APPEAL TO RESTRICT ALL SLAUGHTER TO SLAUGHTERHOUSES

Based on our investigations in March 2020 into the sale of live animals in wet markets in Singapore, we identified serious concerns as following, which have been submitted to the NParks and SFA on 16th March 2020:

- Slaughter of live animals happening in close proximity to the meat sold to public;

- Live animal handlers were using the same gloves to handle cash transactions to the customers, who then exchange cash with vegetable vendors. This translates to same amount of risks to public who are not purchasing anything from these live animal stalls.

- The wild caught soft-shelled turtles were found displayed with rostral abrasions, resulting from containment in netting. Open wounds such as these easily develop into infections from water.

- All the animals (turtles, frogs and fish) were not being fed as shared by the vendor, from the point of arrival to the point of slaughter to prevent bad odour during slaughter.

This translates to all animals staying hungry, in crowded conditions resulting in stress, which often suppresses their immune system increasing potential disease risks and spillovers.

ACRES together with the SPCA Singapore has jointly appealed to the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) to restrict all slaughter to premises regulated by the agencies, and end selling live animals at public wet markets and food stalls, keeping in mind health concerns.

#Singapore has been praised for its leadership, transparency and efforts to protect Singaporeans and is an indisputable example for many nations to follow. We sincerely hope that our concerns are addressed by a positive decision, for better animal welfare and public health safety.
