SO PROUD OF THE ANTI-SNARING TEAM!

In Zimbabwe, Harmony Fund sponsors an anti-snaring team through the charitable Turgwe Hippo Trust. We pay the modest wages of the game scouts who, at the height of their mission, collected up to 4,000 snares a year. Their effective daily patrols have eroded the persistence of illegal hunters over the last decade and the numbers of snares has dropped 10 fold. Even still, hundreds of snares have been found this year, many with triple strands of wired noose that are anchored to nearby trees and capable of taking the life of a baby elephant, buffalo or any small animal.

The Turgwe Hippo Trust is run by conservationist Karen Paolillo and her husband Jean Roger who have taken on monumental missions to protect the local wildlife during times of drought, even building a massive 75 by 30 foot basin capable of hosting many hippos at a time with up to 7 feet of water at the deep end. They drilled a bore hole to reach the underground water which becomes the sole source of drink for everything from crocodiles to baboons to leopards until the sky finally opens up. Sixty-three hippo calves have already been born to the female hippos under watch of the trust.
