So. Today was a sharp reminder and a bad day.

NanaLüs got injuries badly today, and if he was just a hair more unlucky, he would have bled out on the way to the emergency clinic.

Dog owners, please read and take caution yourself.

Everyone who knows NanaLüs knows that he is a high play drive dog. Well he will give you anything to make you play with him, old bottles, balls, disks… And sticks. I don’t think anything of it when he drops something at my feet I’ll just toss it. Sticks are a favorite to chew on too. But this time fate was against it. I tossed his stick… He ran at it and both dog and stick hit the ground roughly the same time.

He ran full speed at a stick that had just hit solid ground. And it impaled him.

Lüs used his front paws, screaming in pain to dislodge the stick front his mouth. Too much blood I couldn’t see where the wound was, I tried to rinse his mouth with some bottled water, the sharp scream returned.

To the ER vet, which is 15 minutes away. And with covid, backed up. Took 45 minutes from injury to just get him in the door.

3 hours after he got hurt, I get the phone call for how his surgery went. Not only did the stick go into his tongue, it went right through it. Through his tongue and throat and lodged into his neck, nearly going through his neck. The stick brushed the main artery under his tongue and missed piercing his jugular by less then an inch. Either of those, and I’d have a dead dog.

He now has sutures under his tongue, in his neck too. And a pocket where the stick lifted the muscle away from the skin. Even on antibiotics that type of zone can get an absess. And that means infection right near two major blood vessels so I have to watch out for blood poisoning as well.

So while my baby is being closely being watched please use this as your own reminder, sticks are not dog toys. Even though dogs can go their whole life with non-issue. Please remember, it can take a single event to end your loved ones life.

I’m lucky this only cost me two weeks pay and not my boy.
