The Pet Memorial

The thing about good boys is that they aren’t always good. They tip over garbage cans. They bark at every doorbell that rings on television. They decide its time to play at 6am. They snore. They fart. They slobber and drool. We find them looking guilty as they stand over the remnants of the pillow they’ve just destroyed. We fall into the holes they’ve so skillfully dug out back. And we hold our noses while hunched over the bathtub trying to cleanse the smell of skunk from their fur.

So why then do we love them with our whole hearts? Why then can we not forget the smell of their fur, the warmth of their ears, the sound of their tails thumping against the wall. Why does the empty bowl in the corner of the kitchen hurt so bad, yet we can’t bring ourselves to put it away. When their bed is finally empty, it feels a lot like the worst day of our lives.
