Two scientific papers on Ulu Muda Forest Reserve were recently published in Malayan Nature Journal Volume 3 Part 3. Both these papers were the outcome of WWF-Malaysia’s conservation efforts in the Ulu Muda landscape, funded by CIMB Islamic Bank.
The first paper was initiated to understand the hydrology of two large tributary rivers of Muda dam — Sungai Muda and Sungai Teliang. This is the first known study that provides a proper understanding of the variety, form and hydrological processes of the river catchments, which can contribute to catchment management and conservation planning in the area.
The second paper was a camera-trapping study on non-volant mammals (flightless mammals) in the least researched areas within UMFR i.e. the river catchments for Sungai Teliang, Sungai Jawi and Sungai Labua.
The study recorded 34 species of non-volant mammals and provided the first comprehensive checklist of these animals in the forest reserve. The least researched area which houses almost half of all the non-volant mammals recorded in Ulu Muda Forest Reserve was proposed to be protected as a wildlife sanctuary or a research forest.
