Honouring World Turtle Day In The Words Of Our Wil..

🐢💚 HONOURING WORLD TURTLE DAY IN THE WORDS OF OUR WILDLIFE VET NURSE ALICIA 💚🐢

As a #VetNurse, I’ve witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by our precious turtles. Many of our rescued turtles suffered injuries caused by #FishHooks lodged in their mouths or throats. Others have fallen victim to road accidents, their shells shattered by passing cars.

For these resilient creatures, a fractured shell isn’t just a surface wound—it’s a matter of life and death. Their shells, composed of spine and skeleton, are their armour and sanctuary. With nerve endings in their shells sensitive enough to feel taps or scratches, each fracture inflicts pain and damage.

Treating these gentle beings isn’t easy. Wild turtles, often shy and reclusive, retreat into their shells at the slightest hint of intervention. Patience becomes our greatest ally, especially when caring for species like the Malayan box turtles, who possess a remarkable ability to seal themselves within their shells like a protective box. It’s a delicate dance of observation and gentle care, ensuring they emerge from their shells and recover with as little stress as possible. – Alicia Wee (ACRES Veterinary Nurse)

On this World Turtle Day, let’s commit to taking action for turtles – by slowing down for wildlife crossing, or by not supporting exploitation of wildlife such as consuming turtle meat or buying exotic turtles (including #RedEarSliders) as pets. Every small act makes a big difference in ensuring a brighter future for our beloved turtles.
