28th Oct 2020, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

[ALL HANDS ON DECK!] You would have seen our completed Iguana Sanctuary in our previous post! (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=332730101399467 ) The completion of the Iguana Sanctuary would not have been possible without the help of our volunteers and corporate volunteers. An extremely small team makes it possibly to accomplish projects that involve laborious tasks. We are thankful to AXA XL Singapore for their gracious sponsorship of the Iguana Sanctuary and all the volunteers who were inv...

Introducing You To The Bin-Gee Cords. Wildlife Man..
11th Oct 2020, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

INTRODUCING YOU TO THE BIN-GEE CORDS! WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT NOTES – Bins & Monkeys Today, we are going to be sharing with YOU a very easy trick to monkey-proof your refuse bins with flap lids. The last thing you’d want to wake up to is the sour, offensive smell of old food that have stewed in our tropical sun. Macaques just cannot turn down an opportunity to complement their wild diets with our human food because of the higher sugar, salt, and spice content. Unfortunately, bin-diving is u...

10th Oct 2020, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

APPEAL FOR INFORMATION: BLK 624B PUNGGOL CENTRAL Thanks to a member of public, a tip-off alerted us to the illegal trapping of wild birds at Blk 624B Punggol Central near the badminton court. We received photos of three men laying traps on the grass and hung cages with birds on the trees nearby. Due to pending rescue cases, we were unable to attend immediately. The alleged poachers left soon after they realised they were being watched. ACRES would like to seek more eyes in the area, to help ...

Notes From Our Caregivers: Making Sure The Banana Is Dead
7th Oct 2020, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

Featured in this clip is #Hawkeye our #ForstensTortoise, an #endangered species, who repatriation slated in April has been postponed indefinitely, no thanks to #Covid19! She is a very cryptic individual who eats and does things, when no one is watching. Jokes aside, she is not exhibiting food rage but showing territorial behaviour through shell butting. We can come up with a 1001 theories, but we would never know what went on in her head. We can only tell you wild animals do not make suitable p...

Commentary: Are We Inept At Handling Wild Animals That Come Our Way?
2nd Oct 2020, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

EDUCATION AND EXPOSURE: A TWO-PRONGED APPROACH A very good commentary from Dr Jaipal, SPCA Singapore "Awareness of how to respond to animals is just the first step. NGOs such as the SPCA and ACRES have long been providing guidance on human-animal interactions and relationships. Many organisations are already doing the important work of increasing awareness and exposure, through nature walks, education talks and producing online educational content. There is room to increase these efforts, esp...

27th Sep 2020, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

ONE OF THOSE MILLION DOLLARS MOMENTS FOR OUR CAREGIVERS Green iguanas, a non-native species are often rescued abandoned, injured or found weak. Most rescued green iguanas come with conditions such as liver failure or emaciation, resulting from abandonment, poor diet or sub-optimal housing conditions. With no way for repatriation, we secured a grant to house them outdoors where they can have a better quality of life! The #Circuitbreaker delayed several projects including this one, and we have...

20th Sep 2020, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

It took a whole village lot of flowers to raise this child! For nectar feeding birds like this olive-backed sunbird, who was handraised as a chick, we had to transition from syringe feeds to feeding from flowers. Over the past two weeks, this chick has shown great improvement and is now in outdoor rehabilitation enclosure. Fingers crossed, we hope she will be fit to return to the wild soon! Did you know that Singapore’s national bird is also a sunbird species? Comment with your answer. #...
