Tourist Tragically Killed By Elephant In Thailand
4th Feb 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

ELEPHANT RIDE ENDS IN TRAGIC DEATH OF TOURIST IN THAILAND His death comes as a stark reminder that wild animals are exactly that- wild. They are not meant to be ridden or used as photography props. If they are, the chances are they have been abused in some way to make them scared of humans. And sometimes these animals simply can no longer take the abuse and exploitation and will one day “snap”, often with tragic consequences. “If you can ride, hug or have a selfie with a wild animal, the...

UPCYCLED ENRICHMENT FOR RESCUED TORTOISES
2nd Feb 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

UPCYCLED ENRICHMENT FOR RESCUED TORTOISES We recently found a discarded metal chair frame. It was in good condition, and we hit on the idea of upcycling it into a climbing structure for the tortoises at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre! This short video explains the project. It took us about 30-40 minutes to put the structure together. In the end it turned out to be much more than just a climbing frame! The tortoises can climb and feed on hanging enrichments. They can also use the bottom part ...

NATIVE WILDLIFE RESCUE ROUNDUP: 29 JANUARY 2016 1. Little Tanglin (top left) was lost in the basement car park of a condo. She isn’t a baby, but not yet a fully grown adult. The security officers on duty were extremely concerned for her well-being and patiently kept an eye on her until we arrived. Tanglin was successfully rescued and moved to a forested area with thick vegetation outside the condo – a much better place for her to forage for food! 2. Gooey (bottom left) is a wolf snake who...

ERNIE, THE VERY PATIENT GIANT ASIAN POND TURTLE
26th Jan 2016, by Animal Concerns Research & Education Society (ACRES)

ERNIE, THE VERY PATIENT GIANT ASIAN POND TURTLE Unlike the other giant Asian pond turtles in our care, Ernie tends to be alert during the usual feeding time, and on this occasion decided to patiently wait for food to be ‘served’. Since her arrival at our rescue centre, poor Ernie has gone through some troubling times. She was bullied by other turtles in her initial enclosure, which unfortunately saw her on the receiving end of a severe bite. We moved her to a different enclosure with a ...

MEET JESSICA REEVES, OUR DEDICATED WILDLIFE GUARDIAN WHO JOIN OUR WORK ALMOST EVERY SUNDAY SINCE 2013! 1. How did you get involved with ACRES? - I knew about the work that ACRES did already, and have been a volunteer working with all sorts of animals over many years, but have never worked with reptiles – I am English & lived 10 years in Holland, and the import of reptiles into Europe is, fortunately, extremely restricted (though sadly Europe also has an illegal trade in wild animals). OSTRICH, THE JAVAN MYNA GETS HIS FREEDOM Every now and then, we come across odd rescue situations. This rescue we faced at 231 Yishun Street 21 was one of the strangest. A Javan myna (named Ostrich by us) got his head stuck in a gap on the ledge of the HDB block. Lucky for him, a vigilant resident from the 5th floor spotted the bird struggling on the other side of the block on the 6th floor and called ACRES. When we arrived to the house where Ostrich was stuck, we had to overcome another situ...
