"I decided to bring my bike to work, and after work I whizzed along the busy street with traffic flying along on one side and a 10 foot wall on the other. A few little shrubs blocked the sidewalk from the roar of the commuting cars. I was day dreaming and cycling when my subconscious slowed me down. What WAS that I had just passed? Trash? discarded clothing? I stopped and went back.
There, crouched next to a small bush was a large fluffy cat. Every time the traffic slowed, she relaxed slight...

This is Cupcake. His mother was pulled from traffic just seconds before being hit by a car on the streets of Turkey. Thanks to volunteer Manuela Wroblewski, the mama cat is alive and delivered her kittens that very night in Manuela's apartment. More than 100 street cats and dogs are fed each day and regular spay/neuter and emergency care services are offered here thanks to Manuela. The Harmony Fund is so proud to help sponsor this special project.
We are ultimately seeking a partnership wi...

AMERICAN HEROES IN JERUSALEM
Judith Weaver of Florida was working for the State Department and stationed at the American Consulate in Jerusalem when she became submerged in the plight of street cats. Even though she'd never even had a pet cat of her own, Judith became a champion for the cats and, working with fellow volunteer Lieutenant Colonel Michael Feltman from the Seattle, she went about the mission of spaying/neutering more than 1,000 of them.
The next time you think a problem is ...

He was first spotted hobbling down the road in the dead of winter, in the dead of night. It was obvious he was all alone in this world, with no home, no food, no love, and probably not much of a chance of surviving much longer out in the bitter cold.
The compassionate young lady who first saw him on that dark icy road stopped her car and tried to coax him into it, and out of the extremely frigid weather. But his distrust of human beings was immense, and he soon turned away from her and hobble...

Kelly Brauer of Florida writes:
"There was a little ball of bloody matted fur that I rescued that had been used as a bait dog. She had puncture wounds all over her body, her tail had been bitten in half and her underbelly had been filleted open. All she could muster was some raspy moans and whines. I knew she would not make it if I didn't act fast. I wrapped her in a warm blanket and quickly made it to the nearest animal emergency room where it was believed that she wouldn't make it through ...

Hundreds of street dogs lined up in a local park in south of Merida on Mexico’s Yucutan Penninsula recently while stacks of Krispy Kreme doughnuts were passed around just above their heads. There may have been a bit of drooling, but frankly, the dogs didn’t seem to mind. They’d already had their lunch and they had arrived for something far more precious...

"This is Ella. She was found on the side of a road in this current condition. A very nice lady brought her to the Dirk’s Fund Golden Retriever shelter to see if we could help her. She was only 34 lbs. You could count every bone in her body. She had to be carried to the scale and to her dog bed because she had no strength. She could barely keep her head up. Still, she would give kisses and LOVED her new bed. The veterinarian’s assessment of her was "we will see if she makes it through tomorr...

"I had just pulled out of the grocery store parking lot when I noticed two small dogs standing by the side of the road. One of them was a little tan mixed breed wearing a black collar; the other a matted little grey Shih-Tzu. At first, I thought they belonged to a man walking down the street, but he simply ignored them both and walked on by.
Suddenly, these two small dogs decided to cross the road in heavy traffic. I jumped out of my truck and I called out to them. The little brown dog t...

Attention New Englanders:
"Salvatore (in Massachusetts, USA) is a purebred Siamese cat who was abandoned by his owners when they decided they no longer wanted him in their house. A neighbor began feeding him once she noticed that they were no longer letting him inside and he got getting skinnier and skinnier. She set up a cat house on her porch and he was happy for the warmth it provided. She fed him and brushed him every day.
She contacted Siamese Rescue, who came to evaluate him and he...

Julie Nuzzo, latest participant in The Great Animal Rescue Chase reports:
"My husband and I have a one-half-acre property with a large vegetable garden in the back. The garden is surrounded by a fence that includes fold over fencing to keep out racoons, possums, etc., an underground fence to keep out digging rodents, and an electric dog fence that runs around the top edge. Whenever I find fledgling birds hopping around my yard in the spring and summer, I catch them with a butterfly net and pu...
