Today, we shared the exciting news that Soi Dog has partnered with Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) to help end the dog and cat meat trade in the Philippines 🇵🇭, a country where we have never previously ventured but one in which the very real possibility of shutting down the trade exists.

But what exactly are we up against in the Philippines and what does the trade look like there?

The dog and cat meat trade has been outlawed in the capital Manila since 1982 and nationwide since 1998, but sadly a thriving illegal industry continues to operate in the shadows.

It’s estimated that 150,000-200,000 dogs are snatched from the streets and slaughtered for human consumption every year in the Philippines, with hotspots being in the northern city of Baguio, the central islands of Visayas and the southern island of Mindanao.

Made up of over 7,000 islands, the geography of the Philippines presents a challenge. However, AKF have two decades of experience fighting the trade across the country – intercepting trucks, carrying out raids on restaurants and slaughterhouses and working with the Philippine National Police to bring traders and smugglers to justice.

Recent raids have taken place in the region of their rescue centre, and we look forward to sharing details of these with you soon.

With our expertise and your support, we can help AKF make that final push needed to end the illegal trade once and for all. Click here to help: https://links.soidog.org/stronger-together
