Did you know that different types of turtles have different sleeping habits?⁠

Sea turtles can sleep in water for several hours without emerging to the surface to breathe. This is because their metabolic rate slows down when they’re sleeping, allowing them to use oxygen more efficiently, which allows them to remain underwater for hours before they need to surface again to change their air. ⁠

⁠

Some freshwater turtles such as softshell turtles can sleep underwater for several hours too. They are able to conserve oxygen when sleeping underwater since they do not move much. They burrow themselves under the mud or sand at the bottom of the pond while sleeping to ensure they are not seen by predators.⁠

⁠

Terrestrial tortoises will find a secluded or isolated place to sleep or bury themselves completely while sleeping if there is enough substrate.⁠ Like other aquatic turtles, they can sleep for several hours too!⁠

The Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia was established in October 2011.
