KUCHING: Eight-year-old Chen Sze Ting, who lost two siblings to hornets, is fighting for her life at the intensive care unit of the Sarawak General Hospital here.

The girl, one of five people severely stung by hornets on Saturday, was in critical condition, said Batu Kawah assemblyman Tan Joo Phoi.

Threat to residents: The hornet's nest found behind the rocks of a hill in Sungai Moyan, Batu Kawa, Kuching. It was destroyed on Sunday night.

Tan said Sze Ting's mother Tan Wan Chew, 29, had left the intensive care unit and was recuperating in a ward.

The five were attacked by the bees during a late afternoon stroll near their home at Sungai Moyan flats in Batu Kawa.

Chen Sze Ying, six, and her three-year-old brother, Chun Jie, died several hours after they were rushed to hospital.

Their funerals are yet to be held.

Tan said the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Batu Kawah branch had launched a campaign to raise funds for the Chen family.

More than RM8,000 has been collected by the branch.

The Civil Defence Department (Rescue 991), he added, had des- troyed two hornet hives on Sunday night.

"The council has engaged a pest control expert to use chemicals to destroy two more hives," Tan told The Star.

The council has put up banners to warn local residents not to go near the hives.
