IN POURING RAIN, ONE CAR STOPS TO SAVE DRENCHED DOG Written by Vena Cava of Tennessee (USA)

I was heading to my night job as everyone else was rushing home from their day job. There was a thunderstorm going on with lightning, thunder and buckets of rain so I hoped there would not be a wreck as there often was at a major intersection. As I stopped for the light, to my horror, I saw a black and white dog right in the middle of the intersection, frantically running up to moving cars as if trying to get inside. I threw on my brakes and flashers and jumped out of the car.

As if I had called her name, the dog raced toward my truck, leapt inside, scrambled across the seat to the passenger side and sat down grinning as if to say “Ok Lady, drive!”

Needless to say, I did not make it to work that night. I took the dog home, dried her off, and made sure she was going to get along with my other three dogs. She acted as if she had lived there all her life as she settled down on the rug to nap. I called the newspaper and placed a found dog ad and also left a found notice at the shelter. A week later, no one had inquired and she joined Cava pack.

She was housebroken and well mannered, though needy. She had obviously been someone’s pet for her coat, condition, toenails and teeth were well-cared for. She looks like a stout Border Collie with beautiful salt and pepper fur. Since she is so pretty, I named her “Purdy.”

I can only guess that she was lost by someone in town for the holidays (search for her owner turned up nothing). She’s ours now and I never cross that intersection without thinking about how lucky she was not to have been hit by a car and that I happened to be there that day.

She still loves to ride in the truck. Every Sunday morning, the moment CBS Sunday Morning show ends with their Moment of Nature segment, Purdy jumps up and runs to the door. Time to head to McDonald’s for a sausage biscuit, her weekly treat.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
