International Coastal Cleanup Day 2018 showcased how technology meets conservation as data on trash collected is inserted in the Clean Swell app, created by Ocean Conservancy – used all over the world.
The collected data deliver a global snapshot of ocean trash, providing researchers and policy-makers insight to inform solutions.
Taking care of our coasts as well as protecting our habitats and biodiversity conservation from trash and plastic reminds us all to stop using single-use plastic for the sake of our environment and future which in turn protects our food security and human well-being.
Fish that consume microplastic means that WE are consuming microplastic too.
Combining ICCD 2018 with International Year of the Reef 2018, a cleanup was done simultaneously in Pulau Bait, Omadal island and Semporna town.
A total of 124 volunteers managed to collect 419kg of trash over these areas.
Majority of the trash collected were plastic bottles and plastic bags, noted the event organising team – WWF-Malaysia, Green Semporna, Persatuan Wanita Pulau Omadal and Persatuan Pencinta Alam Sekitar Pulau Bait.
