Sustainable SRI Rice Farming In Sarawak

Our Community Engagement and Education (CEE) colleagues in Sarawak have been working closely with farmers in a quaint village, Long Langai in Ba’ Kelalan highlands, to promote sustainable rice farming since last year.

Just three days ago, a group of farmers who committed to this pilot project, finally harvested their much awaited fragrant Adan rice, planted in test plots using chemical-free farming method called, System of Rice Intensification (SRI). This project is made possible under a pilot project by WWF-Malaysia through a three-year funding by CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad.

WWF-Malaysia hopes that SRI will help to reduce impacts of farmers’ agricultural practices on the environment. The project adds value to the ecosystem services such as the provision of clean water for irrigation, by minimising upstream land use changes such as unsustainable logging or large scale forest conversion to agriculture. Here’s a short video featuring their hard work.
