My name is Pharrell…like the famous pop singer, Pharrell Williams. Maybe you’ve heard of him, and his megahit song, “Happy”? Well, I was anything but happy not so long ago. My right front paw was in a hideous condition. It was chock full of holes and writhing maggots, and was hurting me so bad.

I admit I wasn’t happy at first about being caught and brought in to Soi Dog hospital. For most of my two years of life, I was left to survive on my own, with no caring owner to look after me, no lovely food to eat, no sweet cuddles to thrill to.

I’d decided the phrase, “dog-eat-dog world” was made up especially for me. I was just that dog you see everywhere, whom no one wanted to deal with, who never even got noticed unless he was in the way. No one had any idea, but I could have been SUCH a good boy! I just never got the chance.

I lived near a temple, and sometimes I’d get some food and love from the monks there. They are good humans, but I can’t say that for all people. Or even most, in my humble dog’s experience. (Although the kind human who alerted Soi Dog Foundation to my situation was pretty OK, it turns out.)

So, anyway, my bad experiences with humans and life in general are why I fought Soi Dog’s animal rescue officer when he tried to catch me. But catch me he did, and he took me to the Soi Dog hospital.

I fought the vets there as well, so they had to give me medicine to calm me down so I could be treated. I didn’t know those humans meant to come to my aid. But despite my resistance, they really did help me. They extracted all the maggots from my poor old paw. Now I am no longer a maggot snack!

Unfortunately, those icky things did a lot of damage by eating away at my paw’s original wounds, which I don’t remember how I got. So many bad things happen to homeless animals, there’s no telling. I might have gotten it caught somewhere, or gotten bitten in a fight with another dog. It happens all the time on the streets of Thailand. In the end, three digits (like fingers on a human) had to be amputated from my injured right front paw. But that was better than losing all of them. My paw’s pad is still in good shape – good enough for me to walk on, anyway.

Now I am safe at the Soi Dog shelter, and recovering. I am eating well and getting the ongoing medical care I need. For example, I was also treated for dehydration. Oh, and those maggots weren’t the only bugs having a go at me…ticks were all OVER me. But the Soi Dog vets banished them for good, thank goodness.

It’s animal lovers like you, who support Soi Dog, whom I really must thank. Because without all of you, I would not have been rescued, brought to this nice place, and looked after so well. I’d still be out there – dead or alive.

Now, thanks to you, I have a second chance – to thrive and to learn to be that awesome dog everyone wants to love. And when a human asks, “Who’s a good boy?” maybe they’ll mean ME! And, like that song I mentioned before, I’ll finally be truly happy.
