Bunny & Indy’s Check-Up (after 6 Months)

It was six months ago that Bunny & Indy’s SDMA tests showed early kidney degeneration. We started on twice-weekly subcut and have maintained that since then. Three months ago, the SDMA readings went down, which was good. The subcut sessions continued.

Today was their check-up after six months from diagnosis.

I was a little worried a few days prior, not knowing what the test results would be like. I guess it’s been quite a journey for me. First, it was Vincent’s kidney failure whose palliative care lasted nine months, then exactly after one month of Vincent’s demise, Zurik was diagnosed with FIP. That was so unexpected and his palliative care lasted four months. So, there has been no time for rest. It’s been a little over a month since Zurik’s passing.

This morning, I managed to get both Bunny and Indy into their carriers and off we went to the vet’s. Indy was mewing throughout the entire car trip and also while waiting for our turn.

Indy has also been having loose stools every now and then. Once, it was even blood-tinged. The vet checked his stools and did not see any worms or worm eggs. Indy was dewormed and the deworming will be repeated in two weeks. He was also given Promax, a probiotic paste, for 6 days after which we will continue with our own probiotics. Indy still has some redness on his gums above his teeth. But generally, his oral health is okay (he had 7 teeth extracted a few months ago). To address this redness, he will need Orozyme on a daily basis.

Indy’s blood test showed an improvement in the SDMA reading even though the creatinine is slightly higher than before (but still within the normal range). His SDMA reading today is 11, which is an improvement from the previous 13 (3 months ago) and 15 (6 months ago). I’m so relieved the subcut is working well for him. The SDMA measures the level of kidney injury. The simple explanation is this: Toxins destroy the kidneys, so by doing subcut, it helps eliminate toxins from the body, so the level of kidney injury will also decrease.

Indy weighs 5.8kg today, so that’s an increase as well (previously 5.4kg). The vet says weight gain is always good for any kidney patient. I’m rather surprised at the weight gain because Indy is an extremely fussy cat when it comes to eating.

Next was Bunny’s turn. Bunny weighs 5.8kg too, and this is also an increase from his previous 5.4kg. This comes as no surprise because Bunny is the food-vacuum – he eats up all leftovers.

Bunny’s ear was a bit dirty and upon checking, there were no ear-mites. So, it was just dirty!

Bunny’s blood test today also showed an improvement in the SDMA reading. Like Indy, his creatinine is also slightly higher, but the SDMA is 12 (which is normal now!). Bunny’s previous readings were 18 (6 months ago) and 15 (3 months ago). Like Indy, Bunny’s twice-weekly subcut sessions will continue.

So, the subcut sessions for both of them will continue until the next check-up.

I’m really relieved that both their SDMA readings have improved and are in the normal range now. However, it doesn’t mean that they don’t have kidney degeneration. They still do, but the subcut fluids is slowing it down and reducing the amount of injury to the kidneys. I’m glad they don’t have to be on any medicine/drugs at this point. Just fluids.

Bunny also had been having chronic eye discharge for years now. We thought it was probably due to blocked sinuses and left it at that. However, two months ago, the vet suggested we try PetDiatrics’ Ophtal (it’s an eye supplement). Initially, there was no improvement at all, but after one-and-a-half months, the discharge reduced until there was no more. Cow also started having eye discharge and I put him on Ophtal too. Cow showed improvement quite fast. I will most likely put Bunny on Ophtal on a long-term basis.

All is good for today!
