Uhu The Spitting Cobra Gets Stuck!

[REPTILE AWARENESS DAY] VENOMOUS SNAKES

They’re not out to kill us all (or take over the world), as you’ll notice in the video.

Equatorial spitting cobras are highly venomous– two words that instil fear and panic in us. These venomous species, including king cobras, vipers, sea kraits and coral snakes, have been around for the longest time, albeit ongoing urban developments have increased sightings of spitting cobras.

Films portray grotesque snake mutants larger than a shophouse and deadly snakes terrorising passengers on a plane. Reality shows and most documentaries also stage dramatic scenes for shock value that hype our unforgiving nature towards these species. It’s no wonder we end up with a heroic/fearful “kill” mentality and our instinctive defence mechanism of flight is seen as weak and not acceptable.

Yup, these movies are pretty much “poop stirrers”.

If you’ve encountered a spitting cobra in Singapore, did you realise how quickly they moved away from you, disappearing into a burrow or drain?

That may have sent shivers down your spine, especially the part that they ‘got away’, and we fail to acknowledge that all they want is to flee from trouble, because it’s energy efficient (than fighting us off). In a similar analogy, if you tripped over a stone on the way to the bus stop, would you stop to hammer the stone to pieces before you flagged your bus down? No. You learn to avoid the stone; you’ll teach your young to watch where they were going. Considerate individuals will kick it to the side (because the stone can’t crawl into a hiding place, and if it did, we’ll have bigger issues than a cobra hunting for an amphibian or rodent).

So if you encounter a snake, regardless of length and girth, put some distance between you. They’ll gladly move away or freeze, pretending you can’t see them, so it’s your move (to go away).

By the way, your donation will help us reduce species misunderstandings and, in turn, create a compassionate society: give.asia/acreswildliferescue

Because we all need a kinder place to live in.

Happy Reptile Awareness Day, everyone!
