Our majestic Malayan tiger is becoming increasingly unsafe in its own habitat.

The sheer size of the Belum-Temengor Forest Complex makes patrolling a massive challenge. Our dedicated Wildlife Warriors leave the comforts of home for a couple of weeks at a time to protect the Malayan tiger and other wildlife.

One of the main tools of a Wildlife Warrior is the camera trap, costing approximately RM2,000 per unit. It is no ordinary camera but specialised, with a heat and motion sensor, made to capture high quality images and withstand the elements. These camera traps enable critical data to be collected which is used to develop recommendations for authorities to make important decisions on conserving tigers and their habitat.

Patrolling work also requires the use of different modes of transportation that includes trekking on foot and commuting via vehicles such as motorbikes, 4WDs and boats. Our Wildlife Warriors rely on off-road vehicles to access the forest interiors where there are networks of logging roads. The maintenance of the 4WDs due to wear and tear costs approximately RM10,000 a year.

Funding for these patrol teams require more than RM100,000 a year which includes wages for Orang Asli field assistants who spend at least 2 weeks at a time in the forest, purchase of field equipment and rations, and other field running costs.
