Its World Rhino Day And It Is Coming Up To The One..

It’s World Rhino Day and it is coming up to the one year anniversary when Malaysia lost its last wild rhino in 2019.

There are 5 rhinoceros species in the world – 2 in Africa and 3 Asia. Out of the 3 Asian species, 2 are found only in South East Asia.

The Javan Rhinoceros is now down to the last 70 individuals on the island of Java. They used to roam the jungles of peninsular Malaysia but the last one was shot in the wild in 1932.

The Sumatran Rhinoceros is down to the last 80 individuals on the island of Sumatra. They used to roam the jungles of the Peninsular and Borneo. Sadly, the last one sighted in the peninsular was back in 2007 and the last one in all of Malaysia died in Sabah in 2019.

This is a species that is facing a very high chance of extinction. Once the mega fauna of the jungles disappear, our eco-system will reach a tipping point of no return with the possibility of catastrophic environmental degradation.

What can you do?

1) Find out more about the plight of the rhinos and other wildlife facing extinction in our country and our region.

2) Reduce, reuse, recycle. Their habitats must be protected, now more so than ever.

3) Support the NGOs working to save our wildlife and their environment. Every little bit helps.

Be a part of the solution today.
