Soi Dog Continues To Highlight Responsibledogowner..

📣 Soi Dog continues to highlight #ResponsibleDogOwnershipMonth, and another important freedom from the ‘Five Freedoms’ of the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) is the ‘freedom from fear and distress.’

This freedom is about providing animals with conditions and treatment that do not cause them to suffer mentally or physically. We believe this is applicable to all animal shelters. Overcrowded conditions and a lack of enrichment, such as daily exercise and socialisation, can have a negative impact on a dog’s mental and physical state.

Here at our shelter in Phuket, we balance the population of dogs in our care by adopting animals out, thus creating room for new arrivals. However, the global pandemic has severely threatened this balance. We have seen a spike in the number of animals coming through our doors, but travel restrictions have crippled our ability to adopt out internationally. As a result, we are currently caring for a total of 1,300 animals – more than ever before. Find out how you can help: https://www.soidog.org/

Despite this drastic change, we continue to uphold UDAW animal welfare standards. Instead of overcrowding our existing dog runs, we have, with your support, expanded and built additional runs. Now, with over 30 dog runs housing an average of 25 dogs, there’s room for residents to roam around freely. The runs all have additional comforts such as dog pools, trees, a ‘sala’ (open pavilion), a roof to protect from rain showers and hot sun and a sewage system to protect against floods.

With few volunteers, staff from all different parts of the shelter have stepped up to ensure dogs are walked and get some quality time out of the run environment. Enrichment like this is key to their wellbeing, and the time they get outside of the run is so valuable to them. 🐶

Almost all of the animals in our care are former street animals who have never even been indoors and need to learn to feel comfortable around people. Socialisation is especially important for shy animals and for those who have been abused. Many adopters say their new companions are very friendly and comfortable with them, even as soon as they arrive from Thailand. This is because of the amazing efforts of shelter volunteers. 🙏 It’s only thanks to your support that we are able to provide these animals with the care and enrichment they need in these challenging circumstances.
