KUALA LUMPUR: The police have questioned a man for animal abuse after he was caught on camera flinging a cat forcefully to the ground.

Wangsa Maju OCPD Supt Rajab Ahad Ismail said a 55-second video of the incident had gone viral on social media and WhatsApp.

“The initial investigation revealed that the incident occurred at a parking lot in front of a row of shophouses on Jalan Rejang, Setapak. The video showed a man picking up a cat which had climbed on his car windshield and hurling it to the ground,” he said in a statement on Tuesday (Sept 22).

He said the incident caused a stir on social media with many criticising the man’s actions, which could have caused injury to the cat.

“A 36-year-old man surrendered at the Setapak police station at around 11.30am on Tuesday.

“The suspect does not have any prior criminal record and is now having his statement recorded by the investigating officer,” he said, adding that the motive for the man’s actions have yet to be determined.

Supt Rajab said the case was classified as animal cruelty under Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act.

He said if convicted, the man faces a RM50,000 fine, one year’s jail or both.

Those with information on the case are urged to contact Insp Siti Aisyah Mohd Nor at 013-933 8214 or Asst Supt Shahrizal Salleh at 017–713 4705 or the KL police hotline at 03-2115 9999.
