When An Animals Environment Does Not Fulfil Its Ba..

When an animal’s environment does not fulfil its basic needs for survival and comfort, welfare is affected. The ‘Freedom to express normal behaviour’ from the ‘Five Freedoms’ of the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare’s (UDAW) is an important factor to uphold when discussing about responsible dog ownership.

Unfortunately, many Soi Dog’s rescues that have come through our doors faced some form of traumatic incident during their time living on the streets. Certain mistreatments such as neglect, abandonment, physical and mental abuse result in abnormal behaviour which can lead to welfare concerns.

Thanks to Soi Dog’s Animal Behaviour and Enrichment Team, countless street dogs were rehabilitated with great success. By applying principles of animal behaviour modification and allowing the dogs to progress in their own terms is important and falls under this ‘freedom.’ It may take months, years, or may be an ongoing process, but we must try to help them in the best way possible i.e. building their confidence, and by approaching a problematic behaviour with patience and positive reinforcement. Furthermore, with the help of volunteers, many dogs were able to trust people again because they were socialised and exercised daily. As a pet owner, it is equally vital to recognise early signs of anxiety disorders and are encouraged to seek help early may minimise the risk that the behavioural disorder could become a major welfare issue. Just like us, our dogs should have the opportunity to have positive experiences, such as anticipation, satisfaction and satiation and it is our utmost responsibility to provide them a wholesome life as their guardians. 🐕
