Soi Dog Marks World Rabies Day!

To mark World Rabies Day today, Soi Dog Foundation held a special vaccination drive at a local community hall here in Phuket. Learn more about the event here: https://links.soidog.org/SoiDog-GARC-event-Thailand

We remain truly committed to the prevention and eventual elimination of rabies from Thailand and join the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) to end human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030, creating a better world for animals and humans alike. While rabies has not been completely eradicated in Thailand, our intensive and ongoing vaccination programme (known as CNVR – Catch I Neuter I Vaccinate I Return) has greatly helped to minimise outbreaks since our founding in 2003.

Thanks to CNVR, only one confirmed case of rabies in a dog has been reported in the last 25 years on the island of Phuket where we are based 👏. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other leading animal and public health authorities have demonstrated that the mass vaccination of free-roaming and pet dogs and cats is the only sustainable way to effectively eliminate canine and feline rabies. Research has proven that vaccinating 70% of dogs in an area will result in the elimination of rabies. It is a similar situation with reducing stray dog numbers; neutering 80% of dogs in an area will lead to a sustained reduction in numbers.

Both Soi Dog’s Community Outreach and Humane Education teams continue to provide technical support to numerous key agencies, including local government, schools and veterinary colleges, and collaborate in support of HRH Princess Chulabhorn’s nationwide project “Rabies-Free Animals for Human Safety.”

The effectiveness of CNVR carried out by Soi Dog has been demonstrated in Phuket, where the dog population is now much reduced despite a growing human population, and where the animals are much healthier than they were a decade ago. It is a great initiative to be a part of and, with your unwavering support, we can continue to strive to do the right thing for the welfare of countless street dogs and cats here in Thailand. https://links.soidog.org/help-vaccinate-street-animals
