One Of Most Frequently Asked Questions During Our ..

One of most frequently asked questions during our virtual tour is, “Why do you microchip the terrapins, and does it hurt?”

We insert a microchip the size of a grain of Basmathi rice into the body cavity of the river terrapins for individual identification. We are unable to tell the terrapins apart just by looking at the physical characteristics. Moreover, we produce at least 200 hatchlings per year.

We do not know for sure whether it hurts, but we’re confident that we’re able to prevent prolonged pain caused to the terrapins, by ensuring that the microchip is inserted at first try.

All terrapins are microchipped prior to their release. We hope that when they mature, or return to nest, we’re able to identify them individually.

We’ll share more about this in our virtual tour, so if you’re interested to join us, our next public tour is happening on Saturday, 7th August at 9:00 am. Sign up here! https://www.turtleconservationsociety.org.my/product/virtual-tour/
