Status update from SPCA Selangor:
We loaded up our Big Red Dog van with food and cages donated by members of the public, as well as animal first aid kits (towel, antiseptic & pet soap) and other supplies/ equipment needed for emergency support. Our team consisting of Animal Welfare Officer Kelvin, driver Samy and several volunteers will be in a convoy with rescuer Razeef to Kota Baru (2nd Jan), and then on to Terengganu and Pahang (3rd Jan).
Another team consisting of Animal Welfare Officer Cunera and driver Murugan will be heading straight to Temerloh tomorrow to meet with the state DVS and move food and other aid items to the DVS office for distribution.
2nd Jan 2015, 12pm
Status update from Kelvin Cheah, SPCA Selangor:
- 2nd trip today: 4pm to Kota Bharu and overnight there, next day to Kuantan then Terengganu
- We are transporting 3 tonnes of food collected by Razeef, and some canned food collected by SPCA Selangor
- Need to focus 80% cat food and 10% dog food, as in these 3 states there are very few dogs
- Will meet with Dr Azri, DVS Kelantan, luckily he allowed us to use their place as storage and to quarantine animals in critical condition (with personnel and vets assistance)
- Still in plan: to set up main drop off point for donations will be set up in Gua Musang as it's the crossing point for northern states (collected donations will go there and we will distribute to other states)
- Maximum of 2 satellite aid centers will be set up in each states, need local personnel (which at the moment we have none)
- Frequency of delivering food supply will be determined by end of this week (at the moment we are going once every 2-3 days)
Access to smaller areas are almost impossible, we can get to major town using main road/highways, but there are many smaller towns like Temerloh, Kuala Krai, Machang are all surrounded by water. Human aid has access to helicopters and boats, but for us animal aid will have to be independent and find our own ways in, as we try not to affect the delivery of human aid.
We are going in with 4x4 and normal cars, but we can only get so far. Furthermore there's no electricity, no water supply, no operating petrol station, no food for us volunteers as well; so there are many things we have to factor in when we bring volunteers.
