Leon was rescued from a mamak, where he was very dirty and drooling, but still happy to be petted. It turned out that he had had some sort of accident where he must have landed on his chin/jaw from height. His chin was completely degloved, resulting in him looking like he was missing a lower jaw. The initial injury was at least a few weeks old, and badly infected. He even had bits of bone exposed, and was surely in agonizing pain the entire time. His injury was also affecting his ability to eat and drink properly.
We brought Leon into our vet, where she went to work on him immediately. She removed infected/dead tissue, scaled the exposed bone parts, and released some skin around the neck to pull the chin closed. But just 2 weeks later, he was able to eat liquid food on his own! He even managed to grow new tissue, and can now eat all sorts of food.
Despite having been through such a traumatic event, Leon is a super happy and forgiving boy. He likes to roll around on his belly and bake air biscuits. He's never even hissed at any of the cats or dogs that come to the clinic! He's super chill and likes to sit on the countertop greeting the clients. It's adorable. He's now getting curious about other types of food too, and likes to stick his head in the fridge.
Leon has been defleaed, dewormed, vaccinated, and neutered. While Leon tested positive for FIV, based on his rate of recovery, we don't suspect FIV complications to arise in his life, as long as Leon lives indoors with good nutrition and follows up with his vet visits once a year. FIV only transmits through mating (but he's neutered) or fighting that results in deep puncture wounds (but he's a lover, not a fighter), so it's perfectly safe for Leon to live in a household with a FIV negative cat, as long as everyone is sterilized and integrated properly.
Leon sure had a tough start to life, but he never lost his faith and love for humans. If you've been looking for a sweet, clingy and manja boy, Leon and his lopsided smile will be perfect for you!
