Hi, Kiranseh --

I've heard stories of women who have begun to lactate when they adopt an orphaned infant; it's usually explained by a surge in hormone levels inspired by the needy baby.

I'm not a vet, so I won't presume to say that's what's happening with Lucky, but it seems possible. I did find this similar explanation online:

"False pregnancy is a condition in which a female exhibits behavior that resembles pregnancy. This is caused by the influence of hormones produced by the ovaries... and the mammary glands may actually produce milk. All this is fairly common in dogs and cats. Both dogs and cats have fairly high levels of progesterone for a couple of months after heat whether they get pregnant or not and if the progesterone level is high enough, it will stimulate uterine enlargement, mammary enlargement and production etc. "

But hey, how lucky can Lucky be?! This is an amazing blessing! :-)

Aww, this is both touching and amazing. Who says dogs and cats cant get along. If it weren't for Lucky, the kittens mite not make it. Lucky is a special dog indeed.

I wonder, though, can the kittens get proper nutrition & antibodies from the dog's milk? Or would it be better to continue with the cat-milk formula?

Dr. Jonathan, Lynie, June, Ashleywong -- anyone out there with some insight on this?

Hi there, your dog is very kind..BTW,are you really sure your dog has milk?
Sometimes they just drink "empty milk",I mean the dog might be no milk but the kitten just keep on searching..do they look hungry after that?

hi my dog has a lot of milk, her milk is totally bloted up and milk sometimes spil out, when she sit on my floor it gets wet.as for the kittens they are happy with their new mum and they are grownig so i think they have enough milk to drink ,except for one kitten still have to be fed by bottle just dripping in her mouth she cant suck and i really dont know why ,i just hope she will be ok soon.

Maybe you should highlight this case to The Star or any newspaper. Even animals can look across the species boundaries, why are humans still so cruel
